San Anselmo is a small town in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 5,558 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and on the edge of Walnut Creek Valley. The name "San Anselmo" comes from two Spanish words: "san" meaning "place of refuge", and "nelvo" meaning "oak tree". In 1795, Captain Gabriel Moraga used this name for an abandoned mission near the present-day town site. The mission was known as Misión de las Conchas (Mission of The Stingrays). In 1821, Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded nearby by Father José Altamirano and brothers Bernardo y Mariano del Valle. Because there were no buildings in Asís that could be used for worship, Father Altamirano built a chapel here in 1822 to serve his new community. In 1849, landowner James Winton purchased Rancho Rinconada from Juan Bautista Alvarado. Winton had been interested in buying land around what is now Walnut Creek Valley because he thought it would make a good agricultural area. He named his rancho after one of his friends, Anselmo Sanchez (1768–1837), who had served as captain general of Mexico City’s military forces during the War of Independence and later became governor of Veracruz state. A post office called San Antonio opened in 1855; its first mail carrier was Samuel Morse.
