On July 16th 1824 Juan Bautista De León founded Rancho Buena Vista at present day's Monterey Peninsula Boulevard and Elkhorn Avenue north of Point Reyes National Seashore. This area became part of what is now Marin County when it was first organized as Sonoma County on January 3rd 1853 by Judge James Wickersham from Alameda COUNTY along with Contra Costa County and Napa Valley counties

The town began as a small village on the edge of present-day Tiburon Peninsula, but grew rapidly after its founding as a post office in 1868. The city was named for General Mariano Vallejo, who landed here with his army during the Mexican–American War and became First Lieutenant Governor of Californios under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1876, San Anselmo annexed part of Sausalito. In 1906 it annexed most of Tiburon Peninsula including present-day Belvedere Heights and developed an extensive commercial waterfront which continues to exist today as one of the largest collection of Victorian architecture in North America. By 1910, San Anselmos had grown so large that it stopped mailing letters from its own City Hall and built an newer building on Telegraph Hill Road adjacent to Civic Center Square where City Hall remains today (although used only intermittently). On December 12th 1915 when World War I ended there were 15 businesses in SanAnselmo employing over 400 people; by 1919 there were 1,500 businesses employing 4,000 people along with 3 hospitals & many other public buildings including churches & schools During World War II much activity took place at Naval Shipyard No.(N)2(S) on Valencia Street near Pacific Highway #1 due to shipbuilding needs for Navy vessels such as "Halsey" (CV-4), "Wasp" (CV-8), "Pioneer" (ASR-3), etc.. Howeverchery operations ceased around 1945 because war production shifted to yards outside the US In 1951 voters approved incorporation into Marin County through Measure B making SanAnselmo Mayoralty District 3 within Marin County instead of having a single mayor per county In 1957 construction began on new Veterans Memorial Hospital which opened in 1961 The Robert Fenton School District opened its doors in 1959 ]] In 1964 development started on what would become Downtown sanAnselmo which included the first shopping plaza west of Sausalito Harbor In 1968 Voters passed Proposition 218 which createdMeasure C increasing density limits then voted down by 54% reelection campaign against incumbent Dianne Feinstein despite strong opposition from business groups whose members had already constructed high density housing developments across town . Despite this setback downtown redevelopment continued apace with several large apartment buildings being built between 1970 - 1980 including One Fifth St., Polk Place formerly Hotel Majestic now known as Park Plaza Renaissance also known as 333 Polk Street renamed “The penthouse” prior to becoming Vista Pointe apartments after Vista Pointe Drive . Also notable during this time period are two important events: The opening night party for John Lennon’s iconic album “Abbey Road” at Ritz Carlton Ballroom and Supervisor Ross Perot's infamous victory speech at Civic Auditorium marking his unsuccessful bid for President . After years Of planning downtown redevelopment finally reached completion with several highrise buildings containing more than 300 units completed beginning in 1984 called Park Plaza Towers
