San Anselmo's economy depends heavily on government services such as education, health care, law enforcement and firefighting combined with heavy reliance on technology and tourism which supports about 70% of its economy. Industries that have long played a major role include shipbuilding (especially for Coast Guard vessels), electric power generation and housing development/rental services; both residential purpose-built developments and conversions from single family homes to multifamily dwellings are common today among high-income earners in this inner-city communitynear BART Stationand close to many hospitals

San Anselmo is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 78,635 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay and is adjacent to Marin County. It formed part of 1853 as part of the Rancho Rincon de la Cruz Mexican land grant to Juan Bautista Alvarado. The name "Anselmos" comes from an old Spanish word meaning "grapevine." A post office called Anselmos was established in 1857, and remained in operation until 1914. The city's first mayor was George Westinghouse. San Anselmo has twice served as the county seat for San Francisco County; both times it was moved to Marin County after San Rafael became its third-largest city. The discovery of oil nears by in 1933 but did not develop into a large industry until 1974 when Shell Oil Company drilled two wells known as Slickwater and Spindlewine under then Senator Dianne Feinstein's then-new state park boundaries southeast of town on well number 2 (now north side of SR 604). This set off a large development around these new wells with homes being built on them beginning in 1934 and continued through the early 1970s when Chevron took over production from Shell including construction of facilities above ground which remain today (the current Chevron headquarters are also located here). In addition to this major development there were other smaller developments such as one near Slickwater well which housed a small grocery store, residential units and hotels before it closed down due to pollution problems in the late 1990s
The town of San Anselmo was founded on October 24, 1795 by the brothers Giovanni and Matteo Sanzio. The name is derived from the Latin word Sanctus (holy). The Sanzios were natives of Naples, Italy and arrived in California in 1769. They began to establish a ranch near what is now San Anselmo when they discovered goldfields in Northern California. The first post office was established at San Anselmo on July 1, 1846. On November 4, 1850, the town incorporated as a city.
