San Anselmo is a townsite in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 21,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the eastern edge of San Andreas Fault. The first European to visit what is now San Anselmo was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 26, 1542. He anchored off the shore of today's town and walked ashore to explore the area. A year later, Portuguese explorer João Rodrigues Cabrilho also visited and mapped portions of what are now Alameda and Marin counties while sailing for Portugal. In 1847, American gold seekers discovered gold near Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County and soon began exploring these new lands. In 1851,Anson Murchison announced that he had found copper north of Angel Island; this led to a rush by miners into this undeveloped area which included much of present-day San Anselmo. On September 9th, 1853 an Act authorizing assimilation into California was passed by the US Congress On November 5th following passage of that act by California Governor Goodwin Liu (D), Mission Dolores became one of four Mexican missions in California along with Santa Clara de Asís (now Mountain View), Monterey and Petaluma under English control until secularization in 1865 when they were all merged into one single mission called Rancho Adobe del Monte which encompassed parts of both Alameda and Marin Counties as well as most or all modern day San Francisco Bay Area including Emeryville & Hayward Valley A post office called "Anselmo" was established at this location on December 12th, 1850 It moved from its original site near Mission Dolores overland to its current site near Golden Gate Park on April 17th 1860 On July 8th 1861 John Sutter erected his first gristmill onshore at present day where he farmed until 1862 when he sold it to Jno Waddell who used it for flour production until 1865 when it burned down . After that failed attempt Waddell spent some time looking for a more permanent mill but nothing came about so he returned eastward in search again in 1866 Waddell met George Crampton who bought his flour mill back from him August 13th 1870 becoming Crampton Mills Incorporated Another failed attempt followed with another mill built at Point Lobos but this too caught fire before completion . Finally Waddell found success with his latest venture being founded as The George Crampton Company Ltd., proprietor/operator thereof since 1872 until it folded up in 1902 In 1906 The George Crampton Company incorporated as Northern Pacific Railroad Co.(later Union Pacific) having acquired former rival Southern Pacific Railway Co.(later UP) mainline rights across Carquinez Strait from NP&RP yards @ Suisun Bayou where they commenced construction Of their first locomotive NR2 #8161) originally named Oldsmobile after manufacturer old models such as those manufactured by Simons Sons (1846-1868). Service begannone other than Friday January 1st 1907 Eastern Standard Time () after crossing tracks through Suisun Channel [] between southbound Suisun Street Bridge ()[and] northbound D Street Bridge (). Work proceeded slowly due to difficult surface conditions caused by large boulders lying atop track bed creating dangerous wakes during high water periods however within 4 years system had been extended West over North Beach Creek onto new right-of-way extending up North Beach past City limits ]. Congruent with timetable changes resulting from devastating 1906 earthquake service increased rapidly due to fast growth of city [] although main line remained open primarily via Pullman cars hauled by NP&RP trains running parallel w/ local buses throughout evening hrs ] At endOf 1915 Union Pacific abandoned main line thru Suisun Bayou junction (# – still visible today just East side Beyond City Limits], abandonment completed mainland US effective May 6 1916] One reason Northern Pacific decided notto extend Main Line further w/ faster amphetamines became available w:e GP finally acquired BNSF & Caltrans lines eastward
In 1847, San Anselmo was founded as a small community on the tip of Point Reyes Peninsula by Captain John L. Sloat and his crew of HMS Discovery. The town grew rapidly after its establishment and soon boasted a population of over 100 people. In 1850, the first school in San Anselmo opened and classes were held in an old adobe building that is still standing today. The town experienced significant growth during the late 19th century in spite of several natural disasters, including the 1906 earthquake which destroyed much of downtown San Anselmo and killed more than 500 people. The town prospered through annexations from other towns in Marin County, including Petaluma and Vallejo. During World War II, San Anselmo played an important role as a naval base for American forces engaged in combat along both Pacific coasts. In 1943, USS Hornet airbase was established at San Anselmopoague Beach to provide support to Operation Neptune’s Spear – the Allied invasion of Japan. Over the years, many notable residents have passed throughSan Anselmo – such as United States president Harry S Truman (1935-1945), actor Yorgos Lanzas (1940-present), author JK Rowling (1981-1997) and philanthropist George Soros (1881-1986).
