San Anselmo is a city in Marin County, California. The population was 117,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west coast of San Francisco Bay, about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Golden Gate Bridge and 3 miles (5.0 km) south of Interstate 580. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now San Anselmo were the Ohlone people who lived there from before 1000 AD. They built small villages along the shoreline until they were pushed out by the Japanese during World War II. In 1853, Miguel Estrada founded an agricultural colony at Point Reyes Station near San Francisco with his brother-in-law José Castro. The two men named their town after both ships that had sailed to America: Santa Rosa de la Frontera for Miguel Estrada and San Rafael for José Castro. The first post office was established in 1854, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1860, part of Rancho Rinconada which belonged to Juan Bautista Alvarado was granted to John Sutter by Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; it later became part of California Colony with other parts joining it over time including Mission Dolores which was founded in 1777 by Franciscan friar Junípero Serra; Mission San Rafael Arcángel was founded nearby in 1797 by Father Ferrer; Don Pedro Menéndez Adobe was built on a hill overlooking Point Reyes Harbor in 1821 by father José Miranda; Cypress Hill Cemetery opened in 1865 adjacent to Don Pedro Menéndez Adobe and contains remains of many Ulysses S Grant’s ancestors including General James Kiah Griggs and Admiral David Dixon Porter In 1881, due to a fire that destroyed most buildings at Point Reyes Station, Avila erected a new lighthouse here called "Lighthouse Hill" (). As this lighthouse became extinct after being replaced multiple times over its lifetime it has been variously called "Avila's Lighthouse", "Miguel Estrada's Lighthouse", or simply "Lighthouse". In 1898, following passage of state law establishing public land sales within Marin County under Governor Goodwin Rusk, Avila sold off rights tolightnery operations at Lighthouse Hill for $7000 cash plus interest to Will Rogers who converted it into one of his early morning radio shows beginning on November 7th 1928 . Following completion Of World War II stimulus spending programs brought about tight housing prices throughout much coastal Northern California especially around Los Angeles which caused an exodus inland towards Hearst Castle where jobs could be found but prices escalated causing many homeless encampments along freeways near downtown Los Angelesousyviability diminished

The San Anselmo area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. By 1821, the town had emerged as a port on the Pacific Ocean and soon became a center of trade with Asia. The town’s growth continued during the 19th century as it became an important cattle ranching and fruit growing center. After World War II, San Anselmo saw rapid growth as a result of its role in technology development and its location within easy access to major highways. In recent years, however, there has been significant redevelopment activity taking place in the town, including new housing developments and a new shopping mall.
On November 4, 1853, the United States acquired Oregon from Mexico. The new nation's governor-General George C. Perkins announced that San Anselmo would be the site of the first U.S. post office in the area, and on December 3, 1853, a donation of land was received from Dr. John Sutter to create an outpost called Sutter's Fort. On January 1, 1854, a company of Americans under Captain James Hurlbut arrived at Sutter's Fort and began construction of a small fortification known as "Fort Point". In May 1854 British soldiers landed at San Anselmo with orders to capture or kill American settlers in order to keep them out of Canada. The garrison at "Fort Point" resisted British troops for several months before capitulating on October 25th. American forces burned down "Fort Point" after their victory over the British troops
