In 1902-1903 a group of businessmen led by Mayor George Witherspoon chartered a company to build an interurban line called the "Anselm Line" between San Francisco and Oakland using money raised from local sales of tickets for the trip. Construction began in 1903 but only 8 miles were built before withdrawals of water made construction impossible. In 1907-1908the new Municipal Railway opened serving all areas east of MacArthur Boulevard including downtown San Rafael with service to Anselm Hill . The growth of telecommunications had a significant impact on downtown Anselm Hill with telephone companies coming to town to lease or own property necessary for phone lines such as Main Street through which calls went into or out of downtown
