Buzz was a tailor who made target shooters' equipment from old clothing he had in his wardrobe. In 1912, Cook and Harry opened the first shooting range in Salinas using materials they had procured from a local hardware store. The first targets were made from chicken wire and straw. In 1915, the family expanded their business to include three ranges: one on First Street in downtown Salinas; one at the John F. Kennedy seaside park; and one on Cannery Row near the town square. Frank Ziegler became the manager of the Kennedy range in 1947, after years as an assistant manager at Cook's. From 1949 through 1957, Jack Aiken managed Cook's range while he served as mayor of Salinas. In 1961, Don Wickman took over management of Cook'srange and added two new targets: a 50-yard bullseye with 3 circles that could be hit multiple times; and a 100-yard steel plate with 10 circles that could be hit once only. In 1966, Dick Blaisdell became Manager of Shooting Range No 1 (later renamed "Gardener's Gulch") which is now home to Salinas Valley Rifle & Pistol Club (SVRPC). In 1978, Bill Hames became Manager of Shooting Range No 2 (later renamed "Shootin' Star").
