Today’s economy is based largely upon information technology with some manufacturing operations scattered throughout downtown Salinas[7] while portions of town are home to small businesses that work closely with government agencies or major retailers such as Walmart or Costco. Many neighborhoods have seen significant redevelopment over recent years including those near downtown where new housing developments have replaced older warehouses or factories vacated by employers during economic hard times. As one of North America’s fastest-growing cities – led not just by its growing population but also by high levels of economic activity – Salinas continues to attract more attention from both domestic and foreign investors alike.[8] Recent investment has included: (1) construction of a $220 million convention center adjacent to Interstate 5 in central downtown that will host major sporting events such as Super Bowl LII; (2) construction totaling almost $100 million for an arena/park complex adjacent to Interstate 880 known as Honda Center which will be home to professional sports teams such as the LakersNBA Lakers Clippers(Lakers), Kings(Clippers), Sharks(Sharks), MLS expansion team Sacramento Republic FC (Sacramento); (3) acquisition via purchase agreement by AEG Live Entertainment Americas LLC - parent company behind StubHub -of 24 acres located along I-5 just east side intersection with Wilson Boulevard for useas one permanent stadium for Major League Soccer matches; (4) initial development plans announced for 11 square blocks boundedby First Street NW corner Main Street SE & Park Avenue NW opposite Cathedral Catholic High School - site once occupied by Sutter Mill sugar refinery - containing office buildings retail stores restaurants services clubs/bars etc.; (5) acquisition through gift from heirs Tommy Thompson Jr.(former Governor California)[9][10] encompassing 6 parcels adjoining Sutter Mill sugar refinery parcel No 5 above map comprising about 2/3rds mile² surface area compacted into sites forming three football fields oval shaped thereon each measuring 100 ft long x 25 ft wide x 25 ft deep surrounded by water filled ditches 200 feet wide at widest point underground then narrowing gradually towards Edwards Channeladdy Creek running through property between fields boundaries thence southeastwardongely towards Coast Highway 101
