After World War I ended with America's entry into World War II, Japan began building an airfield on what is now southbound Interstate 5 near present-day Coyote Hills Boulevard. When America entered war again against Japan in 1945, they bombed Tokyo without warning American citizens living there – many lost their homes or were displaced from their properties within days of the bombing campaign starting; this includedSalinas' Mayor Antonio Romo who fled through Mexico City to safety before it could happen
