Salinas, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 36,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Salinas River and is part of the San Joaquin Valley. The area that now comprises Salinas was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1824, when Mexico acquired California from Spain, it included what are now Salinas and Monterey counties. But because Mexico never exercised its claims to Alta California, these two towns were not united until 1859 when they fully split off as separate municipalities. The early history of Salinas can be traced back to November 10, 1692 when Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá passed through this area on his way to find a route to Santa Barbara County. At that time there were no permanent settlements in this area and most people wandered about for weeks or months before finally settling down for awhile near where they would live for the rest of their lives. The first European settler in what became known as Salinas was José Francisco Peralta who arrived in 1795 after traveling downriver from Nueva Vizcaya with three hundred soldiers and twenty horses under Captain Félix de la Rúa y Valdivia y Arellano. For many years Peralta ran a post office here and mined salt from an operation still extant today on Union Street just east of downtown (now Prospect Avenue). In 1824 both Peralta’s post office and mine were closed by Mexican authorities after reports of Indians raiding farmsteads along the riverbanks west of present-day downtown Salinas. However, because Alta California remained unoccupied by either Mexico or any other country during this period, these raids did not result in any significant consequences for locals living along the riverbanks at that time. Most likely because there was no market for Indian goods outside of Mexico City at this time, local farmers continued to grow crops despite government restrictions against doing so. In 1839 Antonio Lorente chartered Rancho Parralde de las Flores which encompassed much of what is now eastern Monterey County including present-day Salinas County except for some small parts south of Tomales Bay which he claimed as part of Valencia del Oro settlement grant granted him by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on October 12, 1840 pursuant to Mission Law No.: 24 “An Act Granting Rancho Vallejo al Rancho Los Olivos y el Rinconado para el Estudio Natural” also known as “The Adobe Grant” (). This grant allowed Lorente – one half owner/operator with Fernando De La Cruz – to build an Adobe Walls ranch house near modern day Del Norte Road between Menlo Park Boulevard and Hwy 101 eastbound; northbound: Hwy 101 access road (Cedar Ave.) Many years later another half owner/operator named Antonio Canales purchased Adobe Walls from Lorente following his death circa1960; current owner: John Sausage & Associates Incorporated) . Although there have been several attempts over recent years to clear away trees surrounding Adobe Walls such as removing all but one tree within 5 feet OF wall surface since 1984 (!), originaladobe walls remain a physical remnantofthe early historyofthisarea inthespiritualand temporalaswellasthehistoricvillageofSalinasfoundin1859whenAltdelMexicosplitofftotheirownmunicipalities . Today only about 2%oforiginaladobe wallsremain(about20ftbehindwallsurface),buttheycontinue towalkontotheheartofthespiritualandtemporalhistoriaclocalcommunityofSalinas .
