The Spaniards founded what is now Salinas on December 3rd, 1794 by Captain Antonio Lopez de la Concha y Rojas. José Francisco Menéndez y Avilés came to look for land in 1827 and claimed an area extending from the mouth ofuyuni River to the north to include present-day Salinas; however no deed was ever filed until 1868 when Don Fernando de Anza granted Rancho Nuevo San Lorenzo de la Conchita to José Antonio Peralta.
In 1859 Spanish Governor Manuel Micheletti issued a proclamation establishing a mission for Catholic missionaries at Coyote Creek which lay within modern Salinas. Mexican Missionaries Tomás Gomez and Bartolomé Carrera served as priests there from January 1st 1860 until their expulsion in 1865. They established several small stations along Coyote Creek before finally leaving on February 14th of that year after having baptized over 100 people including 21 children under 10 years old who accompanied them on their missionary journey westward across America For many years after they left Mission Coyote Creek remained unoccupied but it changed hands several times between Chinese farmers and ranchers then into private hands before being purchased by American Pacific Railroad in 1908. In 1862 Californian Juan Bautista Aguirre founded Agua Blanca del Norte some east of present day Coyote Creek where he built a cabin and started raising cattle which he sold to American traders. However this community only lasted about two years before Aguirre returned home due to illness. In 1865 Mexican Father Miguel Hidalgo moved his religious congregation from Mission Coyote Creek back upriver to what is now known as downtown Santa Clara
In 1821, the Mexican government granted land to José Joaquin Murillo, a wealthy Spanish-American veteran and rancher. The land was in what is now Salinas County. Murillo founded the town of Salinas on the site of his ranch in 1825. The first post office was established in 1829. By 1840, the population had grown to about 100 people. In 1850, Salinas became part of California when it was acquired from Mexico by the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
