The history of firearms in Salinas, California began with the Rancho San Joaquin Indian reservation. The area that is now Salinas was first occupied by the Kumeyaay people in the early 1800s. In 1836, Mexican cattle ranchers bought land near what is now Salinas from the Kumeyaay and started to ranch it. One of these ranchers, José María Ortiz, developed a small farm on his property in 1840. He used an animal husbandry system which he learned from his father. Ortiz's farm grew into a large operation that produced a variety of crops and livestock including cows, pigs, horses and llamas. In 1851, José Antonio Garza purchased Ortiz's farm and turned it into a sugar plantation named Garza&Hutchinson sugarcane plantation (now part of Syngenta). This plantation was one of the largest in California at that time. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Abner Doubleday founded Fort Ord on San Francisco Bay to protect Santa Cruz County from Confederate attack. When hostilities ended in 1865,Doubleday sold Garza&Hutchinson sugar plantations to various investors for $5 million dollars. From this point forward there were several owners and operators of sugar plantations within Sonoma County until World War II when all those plantations were decommissioned or destroyed by fire or other natural causes

On October 12th 1846 Californian Captain Augustus Kelley discovered gold field near modern day Tomales Creek while exploring the Sacramento Valley east of Redding along route 7 miles north of Yuba City with guides Manuel Nieto and José Santos Vásquez. On January 20th 1850 Lieutenant George Atherton arrived at Tomales Creek with news that gold had been discovered but no man could be brought over to claim it because there was no road then available to transport goods across country to cash out claimants or assay them for treasure trove worth millions of dollars today’s equivalent in U.S currency–the discovery led directly to Gold Rush days celebrated annually throughout most of North America including hereabouts just weeks later when Atherton’s party again reached same creek finding nothing but what had once been seen only by him several weeks before! The first post office opened in Salinas on April 6th 1850 under the name “Fresno” after President Felix Cámpora appointed Majors Hennepin & Marchant Postmasters General from this territory serviceable under President Polk during Mexican War (1846-1848). It served until 1861 when a new ranch house constructed by Captains John Wetherbee and David Montgomery became the first post office building erected within Easy Company US Volunteer Infantry Regiment Regimental Headquarters Battalion located at current day downtown Salinas Historic District honoring that event which commenced July 5th 1861 duringilities against Adobes raiders who sacked our small mission/fortification adobe buildings adjacentMission Adobe Complex northeast corner Main Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue) commemorating event date July 5th 1861 also silver star awarded major General David Montgomery for heroism during engagement being one among many engagements leading up successfullyto Colorado River crossing two days later achieving independent nationhood thereby ending hostilities against Mexico following approximately 350 days insurgencywordpress
The first Anglo-Saxon settlers in Salinas, California were the Pilgrims who landed on November 12, 1620. The town was founded by the Englishman John Winthrop and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. The first post office was established in 1775. In 1821, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing the creation of a military reservation in San Luis Obispo County for Indians known as the Alta California Mission District. On October 15, 1824, Lt. Gov. Manuel Nieto granted official status to the mission district and its inhabitants as Mexican citizens by proclamation. A year later, on December 10, 1825, Santa Clara Valley Company landowner Manuel Nieto organized a group of Californios to purchase Rancho Rincon de la Bolsa from Francisco de la Hoz y Menrquez and establish an agricultural settlement there called Rincon de las Palomas (Rincon ofthePalomas).
