In 1892, the San Francisco Alta California Rifle and Pistol Club (SFFARPC) was formed to promote pistol shooting in the city. The club secured a firearms license from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and on September 15th, 1892, they held their first meeting at the Inman Hotel. It is believed that these early gun chokes were designed by Captain John Sargent of Oregon who had been imported into California as part of a treaty between the United States and Mexico. In 1898, after World War I began, President William McKinley signed an executive order designating rifle ranges across America as “gun-free zones”. This policy further restricted civilian access to firearms in those areas. During World War II Salinas played an important role as both an airfield and shipbuilding center for American war production; many aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Lockheed got their start here during that time period. There is a lot of debate over the best way to describe gun chokes. The term "gun choke" has been used for various different types of devices that are used to restrict the flow of ammunition from a firearm. A few examples include: magazine catch, barrel shroud, and trigger guard/guard assembly. One common type of choke is the Weaver choke. It's named after its creator, George Weavers, who developed it in 1892. This type of choke requires two parts: the receiver (top) and the barrel (bottom). The top part features a metal band around the circumference that fits into one or more notches in the barrel. When you cock your rifle, this band pulls against several metals in the barrel which limits how much ammo can be fired at once. Weaver chokes come in both standard and Magnum versions. The Magnum version has more metal content which makes it harder for rounds to pass through while still allowing some rounds to hit their target. Standard Weaver chokes typically have either six or twelve notches on them.

The government used these lands to build military airfields and other infrastructure during the Cold War era. More recently, much of the valley has been designated as a national park administered by USDA/NPS).
The city of Salinas was founded in 1853 by the brothers José and Francisco Gómez. The city's first post office opened in 1854. In 1875, the City of Salinas incorporated as a town. In 1916, the United States government acquired part of Rancho San Miguel de la Frontera, including what is now Salinas, for military purposes. This land was later sold to the Gómez family and became known as Rancho La Purísima. The city of Salinas grew rapidly during World War II due to its strategic location on Highway 99 between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The war created a large influx of refugees into the city, which led to increased population growth and development.
