In 1851, Rancho San Marcos was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado who named it after his father-in-law (and later Governor) Manuel Nieto y Peralta; two near by rivers had both been called Rancheros de las Flores - Rancho Manzanar and Rancho Arroyo Seco - but this one had “Alvarado” in front while Las Flores behind it Additionally, another rancho also bore this name—Rancho Los Coyotes—but that too became vacant late in Alvarado’s life and eventually passed into private hands Finally there was also a piece of land stretching from Porterville north tovineyards known as Encinal de los Olivos where some buildings still remain today After years use for grazing pastures until 1906 when USGS regional offices moved into new facilities nearby these lands became state filled reservation under Army Corps jurisdiction with homesteaders leasing them back over time This area now includes much of downtown Salinas with many businesses located on Market Street near High Street salinity levels have reached dangerous buffership levels causing some major flooding during storms like Harvey however more recently there has been development taking place on sections above historic buffership levels . Downtown business owners are working hard to try and reduce or mitigate impacts through various means such as rain gardens, groundwater capture systems, green roofs etc .. As we move into 21st century our city will continue experiencing growth due to its location within agricultural corridor servicing ranches northeast , west central Santa Cruz County & southeast Ventura County

In 1899, it became an incorporated city with a population of over 50 residents. In 1951, it merged with nearby Modesto to form the current city of Salinas.
In 1821, Mexican settlers, led by José Joaquín de Haro y Aguilar, founded the town of Salinas on the banks of the San Diego River. The name was chosen to honor Mariano Salinas, a Spanish governor who had helped promote agricultural development in California. The town quickly grew and soon became a major regional center for trade and commerce. By 1834, it had become the largest city in Alta California. During the late 1840s and early 1850s, Salinas experienced significant growth as a result of its importance as a transportation hub for goods locomotives and stagecoaches traveling between Monterey Bay and Los Angeles. In 1852, construction began on what is now City Hall Square in downtown Salinas. This important civic center was designed by Churubusco architect Pancho Villa and inaugurated in 1855 with a public dinner honoring then-Governor Manuel Micheltorena. Salinas continued to grow during the 1860s through the efforts of its mayor, José Antonio Nieto; its first streetcar line; and its thriving livestock market. In 1865–1866,Salinas hosted two international exhibitions – one focusing on American art (the "Exposition Universelle"), while also exhibiting works from Europe (the "Eighth International Exposition"). In 1870–71, following Mexico's defeat at the Battle of Monterrey over control of California after 30 years of war with Spain, new hostilities erupted between Mexicans living in Alta California and those seeking annexation by Mexico (the so-called War for Overthrowing Mexico). As a result of this conflict known as the Mexican Civil War (1846-1848), many people fled to Salinas – making it one of America's most heavily populated cities during that time period. This severe population depletion caused some businesses to close their doors due to competition from new arrivals or lack thereof; however, many others prospered thanks to generous government subsidies which kept prices low for staple foods like flour and rice while creating an environment conducive to business growth.
