After Vancouvers departure, new settlers began to arrive and various attempts were made to establish settlements including two failed efforts led by Colonel James Larkin near Bouchard Point and at Rancho Rinconada which would later become downtown Sacramento. In 1824 another group of Englishmen attempted to enter California through Sutter’s Mill but they were thwarted by Native Americans wielding bows and arrows.) From this point forward until 1850s most of what is now downtown Sacramento was within the current boundaries of ranchos owned or leased by Anglo-Saxon Californians such as John Sutter (the founder of Alameda County), James Larkin (founder of Yolo County), Pacific Gas & Electric Co., Western Union Telegraph Company etc

Sacramento County was created on November 3, 1852, from parts of Yolo and Contra Costa counties. Sacramento became the county seat in 1855. The population of the city of Sacramento grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a city in 1850, and by 1870 it had outgrown its original boundaries. In 1876, the City Council voted to annex part of Rancho Cucamonga into Sacramento County to increase its population size.
