In 1865, he donated the telescope to the California Academy of Sciences and it is now one of its primary exhibits. From 1871-1873, Reverend Wm. Higginson used binoculars for astronomical observations at night during sandstorms that struck Sacramento County. In 1876, Averill Harriman established what is now Northern California Electric Company in Sacramento with intentions of powering towns with electricity. He needed strong eyesight so he commissioned an eye doctor to designbinoculars that would allow him see clearly at night while casting power lines across the countryside
Sacramento, California is a city located in the state of California. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 553,595. The name "Sacramento" comes from Spanish missionary José Joaquín de Herrera who named it for Saint Sacramentus, a bishop in Rome during the time of Jesus Christ. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sacramento County were Francisco López de Legazpi and Gaspar de Portolà in 1542. The area that includes modern-day Sacramento was part of Juan Bautista Nieto's Rancho San Lorenzo. A small village called Yreka was founded by Native Americans near present-day Midtown Sacramento on May 14, 1858, following an attempt by Mexican forces to retake Yreka from American settlers. On November 7, 1859, Californian General Antonio Vallejo established Fort Point at the junction of current-day Geary Boulevard and Capitol Street to protect Yreka from possible attack by American troops under Colonel John Sutter. In 1864, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Fort and this led to increased immigration to California as miners began seeking financial opportunity in what would become one of America’s most highly populated areas. In 1865 Governor Pio Pico appointed James Waugh as commissioner of Public Works to build roads and other public improvements throughout California including new settlements such as Yreka and Auburn (now Oakland). Waugh also provided land for a new town called Sacramento which would eventually be renamed after George Washington Carver when he became its first mayor in 1907. The railroads arrived in Northern California during the late 19th century because they offered faster transit than boats or wagons over water routes linking Santa Clara Valley with Los Angeles and points northward. The Central Pacific Railroad reached Sacramento on October 12, 1885 via connectors at Placerville and Colusa; it became known as Calafia because one half mile wide bitumen road led east from its terminus between Elk Grove Village and Northridge through Amador County into Benicia County before terminating at Madera Creek behind Mount Diablo National Monument west of Redding
