In 1964, when Interstate 5 bypassed Roseville entirely and routed along State Route 99 instead (now SR 99), much of the original business district around Centerville Road was destroyed by fire during an uncontrolled burning spree that lasted several days. However, within a few years most businesses had recovered and many local residents had returned home again due to changes in highway travel patterns paralleling those affecting larger cities such as San Francisco Bay Area – making life easier for commuters driving into downtown Sacramento or away from large metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles or San Diego County via I-5 southwards out of central California into Mexico City (I-5 becomes US 99).
