Roseville is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the county and the second-most populous city in Northern California after San Francisco. The name "Roseville" was first given to it by John Sutter during his gold rush days. Roseville's location on State Route 24 made it an important junction for travelers heading to San Francisco and Sacramento from Arcata and other points east. The city was founded on May 10, 1851 by George Washington Carver and others led by J.P. Morgan at what is now known as Carver Park Drive and Main Street. In 1872, railroad worker James Irvine built a small monoplane Airport near downtown Roseville so that he could fly goods to Sacramento without having to leave his railway job early each day like many other pilots of the era. The post-World War II boom years brought large waves of immigrants - more than 1 million people came through Roseville between 1945 and 1990 - along with new jobs in information technology and housing development. Many older residents continue to live here today, although some younger families have moved into nearby towns such as Martinez or Hercules since 2000;[2] overall, though there has been net loss of population over time,[3] Roseville remains one of the most ethnically diverse cities in North America (it ranks second behind Compton).[4] The City of Roseville has always been committed to public education throughout its history; starting with a school district established in 1850 which included only one block outside town limits! Today we offer basic education including Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade thru our generous community resources including: parks & playgrounds/sports complexes/libraries/theaters/cafeterias etc., while our rich historical architecture continues to provide inspiration for local artists who are Rochester Hills natives but also world renowned around the Bay Area!
The first Europeans to explore and settle in the area now known as Roseville were French explorer Jacques Marquette and his band of missionaries in 1795. The town was founded on April 6, 1851 by J.D. Payne, a local rancher and landowner. Payne donated the land to the city for development. The first building in Roseville was the Post Office, which was erected on July 7, 1851. The first schools were built in Roseville during this time: one for boys at East First Street and North Live Oak Avenue; one for girls at Northeast Third Street and Enterprise Avenue. In 1857, the City Council adopted a resolution calling for a public school system withinRoseville limits. On May 8, 1861, classes began in what is today City Hall School District #1 when Reverend James Fenton became the first teacher of that institution. In 1865, Roseville became part of Rancho San Joaquin County when it was formed from parts of Contra Costa County and Tulare County. The county seat shifted from its original location at West Hollywood to Roseville several times over the years but always returned back to West Hollywood after being moved away again (the last time happening in 1951). Roseville continued to experience growth throughout its history with various businesses opening up shop here such as banks (First National Bank & Trust Company established here in 1911), restaurants (Papa John's Pizza opened up shop here in 1957), stores (Jardine's department store opened up shop here in 1951), as well as an increasing number of homes being built along North Live Oak Avenue between First Street and Second Street due to population growth throughout this period. In 1978, Mayor Tom Bradley proposed that all Unified School Districts within city limits be amalgamated into one entity under his leadership; this proposal ultimately passed with support from both sides of politics before becoming law five years later following another vote by the City Councilmember who then chaired that body - much like how it currently functions under current mayor Dean Sammich Jr.'s leadership! The following year saw a major milestone for Rosevale when new freeway construction came through which also impacted many aspects of our community including increased traffic congestion along I-5 southbound near downtown; however overall things have been slowly improving over recent years culminating with us having our very own Pedestrian mall complete with theaters/entertainment venues/shopping mall located just north of downtown called "Civic Center" which opened up on November 1st 2016!
