A post office was established at Rosendale in 1867 (), and remained in operation until 1959 (). In 1886, large quantities of silver were discovered along what would become known as the Silver Belt between Mount Whitney and Big Bend National Park. In order to capitalize on this new found wealth, various businesses were established throughout what became known as the Gold Rush era: mines such as Dennison Mines (1887), Donner Mines (1892), Valentine Bros. & Co.'s Mining camp (1893), Folsom Brothers' Water Supply Company (1894) and others (). In 1898 Mayor Jens Jacobsen spearheaded efforts to rename Rosendale after General Grant's wife Ulysses S. Grant () because she desired Roseville's location adjacent to Fort Sumter so her husband could be commemorated there more prominently than he had done at nearby Fort Kearny () where he had served earlier during the American Civil War (). The first sign bearing Ambassador John Hay's Cypress House Hotel - now part of UC Riverside - appeared outside the Post Office Building on Main Street on July 1st 1898 (). By 1904 most businesses within or adjacent thereto had changed hands multiple times due primarily to gold fever brought about by overpopulation (), depletion of natural resources caused by mining operations (), social unrest caused by organized labor movements encouraging migration northward (), etc.). A significant development occurred with incorporation into incorporated government entity with its own fire department() which helped reduce congestion within downtownroseville during World War II when materials necessary for war production were available only locally(). Roseville is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,827 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Northern California and the third-largest city in San Mateo County after San Francisco and Emeryville. The city of Roseville was founded on December 12, 1866 by John Sutter and his wife Catherina Beavers. At first they named their new settlement "Bear Valley", but changed it to "Roseville" because of a rose that grew near their place of origin. In 1868, when Sutter discovered gold near modern-day Redwood City, he set up a post office in Roseville with the name Gold Rush vein for miners to send back reports about the gold prospects in that area. In 1892, William Randolph Hearst purchased some land east of present-day Oakdale from James Ewing for $10 per acre ($). Hearst built himself a mansion on this land which he called Hearst Castle. He soon became one of the most powerful men in Roseville andiasmtelevision mogul who built much of what is now downtown Roseville including many businesses such as The Chronicle Newspaper Company (now known as McClatchy Newspapers), ABC Radio (now KNX 1070), and KQED TV (now KQED TV San Francisco). A few years later Hargrave bought out Randolph Hearst's interest in Hearst Castle and continued to live there until his death in 1972. He left behind several large properties within kilometers or miles of where he had lived since childhood: three blocks north of Main Street between Fourth Avenue and fifth Avenue; two blocks west of Union Boulevard between Second Avenue and Third Avenue; four blocks south of First Avenue between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue; six blocks east of First Avenue between Second avenue and Third avenue; eight blocks northeast from First Ave., across Market Street from Sacramento Street
