Roseville was founded on December 3rd 1853 by John Atherton and his wife Eliza Atherton. It is named after a small rosebush found near the town site. The first post office in Roseville was established on January 6th 1854. The name of the town changed to Roseville on May 10th 1865 by order of Governor George Hearn from Lynbrook to avoid confusion with other towns in Contra Costa County with similar names such as Livermore and Hercules. In 1876, the town became a City when it passed an act becoming one of San Francisco's 34 original cities. On October 15th 1886, Captain Charles Wetherill of the Ulysses S Grant Coast Guard died while patrolling off shore off Tomales Bay and shortly before his body had been brought ashore for burial at sea by members of his crew; this event led to increased interest in coastal defense against pirate activity during the late 19th century which resulted in new fortifications being erected around Tomales Bay including Fort Point National Monument today
