By 1915, AmosRussell had built up an empire with his own retail business that sold binoculars through mail order. In 1928 he moved his operations to a larger facility on Imperial Avenue inRoseville. The following year he opened the first electronic instrument shop in California. By 1933 the company had become known as American Optical Incorporated (AOI). AOI manufactured most of the components necessary for making high quality optical products including lenses and mirrors. In 1951 AOI merged with British Optics Limited (BOL) creating one of the largest optical equipment companies in North America
The city of Roseville is located in the Sacramento-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of over 2 million. The city was founded in 1876 by General James Shields and named for his daughter, Roseanna. The first business in Roseville was a dry goods store, which opened its doors on December 12th. Today, there are many businesses that have been established within the walls of the City Hall building since its construction in 1922. Roseville is home to two universities: California State University at East Bay and Northern Arizona University. The City also has two professional sports teams: the Sacramento Kings and the Roseville Americans (now known as the Alhambra Flames). In addition, there are several businesses that offer services such as real estate, accounting, law enforcement and more. There are many events that take place throughout the year within the boundaries of Roseville including Taste of California Festival, Auto Show & Exposition/Roseville Fairgrounds Speedway Days and Holyoke's Christmas Parade. Roseville was founded in 1872 by F.B. Houghton and W.M. Reynolds as a small town on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 25 miles north of Sacramento. The area that now includes Roseville was part of Rancho Utrera, which was given to George Cohan in 1836 by his father-in-law, Judge Manuel Nieto. In 1862, James Irvine bought Rancho Utrera from Cohan and began to develop it into a large agricultural center with ranching and mining operations. By 1870, Roseville had a population of 1,500 people and waseling out land for farmers to grow crops or mine coal and other minerals. In 1892, following annexation by Roseville of part of El Centro County (then located in southern California), the town's population exploded to over 10,000 people as goods flowed in from El Centro and other parts of Southern California during the Gold Rush period. This influx led to increased development around the town: new housing developments were built; businesses were started; schools were established; water systems were installed; and streets were widened and improved. During this time period also came advances in transportation: an elevator first appeared in 1911; Roseville became one of the first cities in California to have electric streetlights;RoseVILLE Railroad opened its line through the city on May 12, 1928 . After World War II ended with American victory over Japan at Okinawa Island on August 14th 1945, most residents left for rural areas throughout California due to high taxes associated with postwar reconstruction efforts across the stately metropolis that rose like Phoenix from mudslides after years of drought caused by Lake Oroville Dam failure (the largest man-made lake ever created).
The first European to arrive in what is now Roseville was the Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 26, 1542. He named the site San Francisco de la finca (after his ship, Santa María), and it was here that he landed on July 7, 1543. The town of Roseville was founded by Captain James Cook on November 3, 1777 as a small trading post on the east side of the Sacramento River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and became an important port for trade with China and other parts of the world. In 1851,Roseville became part of California when it was admitted as a state. The town experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century thanks to its lucrative agricultural industry and its position as a key transportation hub for goods going east-west across the state. In 1906,Roseville became one of two cities in California to be incorporated with a population over 100,000 people. The city has continued to grow since then and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California
