Rosemead is a small town in California, located about an hour's drive west of Los Angeles. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of Riverside County and is bordered by the city of San Bernardino to the east, Ontario to the north and south, and Loma Linda University to the west. The name "Rosemead" originated with a family who ranched on what is now Rosemead Boulevard in 1887. The Boulevard was named for a pastoral valley that stretched from Orange County east to Riverside County. By 1890, some of these founders had moved to what is now Pasadena and founded what became Pasadena social clubs called The Arboretum Club (now known as Friends of the Forest). In 1924, after two years of discussion among local inhabitants about development plans for their community center on land adjacent to their high school (then known as Lakeside), voting began on whether or not Rosemead should become an incorporated town. A majority agreed with incorporation but several citizens were unsuccessful in getting incorporation through petitions and referenda that year; they formed a Citizens' Committee which formulated development plans instead In 1925-1926, residents organized themselves into committees charged with developing routes and transportation systems; this led to the construction of first public transit services in Rosemead when the Southern Pacific Railroad donated rolling stock for use on its line between Los Angeles and Riverside. In 1928-1929, it was decided that there would be only one elementary school – one elementary student per teacher – so students could specialize more easily in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; also during this time period residents developed a strong sense of community self-reliance by erecting their own blockhouse/watchtower without assistance from government or civic organizations
