Rosemead is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 1,284 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Delaware County, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Rosemead was Lorenzo de la Hoya in 1847. La Hoya named his land Rancho San Francisco after his father's estates in Spain. In 1853, Joseph Sutter moved to Rosemead from Stockton and established himself as a trader and agriculturist. In 1861, he patented two hundred acres of land that now makes up most of downtown Rosemead. Sutter also founded Sutterville with fifty acres adjoining his original grant in 1865, which became one of the largest villages on the East Coast of North America at that time. Downtown Rosemead began to take shape when a group of businessmen led by John Waddell purchased property near Main Street and started erecting businesses such as the Bank of America (1911), Waddell’s Drug Store (1912), Old Style Clothing Store (1914), and First National Bank (1920). The early 20th century saw dramatic changes for Rosemead as well; during World War I many residents served in various military units or participated in government-sponsored agriculture projects such as growing wheat for bread production; during World War II much industry relocated to nearby Kern County but many homes were destroyed or damaged by fire; and post-war growth brought more people and increased development around Main Street including retail stores, restaurants, office buildings and an agricultural park until it surpassed downtownrosemonde as a center for community life around 1985 when Interstate 5 crossed over into town limits

Rosemead was founded in 1887 by a group of investors from Pasadena, California. The town was named for the rose bushes that grew near the town's first stop on the railroad. The founders were interested in developing a small agricultural community and thought that Rosemead would be a successful farming town. They built their first home in 1890 and began to sell land to settlers. By 1908, the town had grown to about 115 people. In 1914, the Rosemead-Laguna Railway was established and allowed Rosemead to become an important transportation center. The railway helped bring more people and goods to Rosemead and made it easier for residents to connect with other communities in southern California. In 1951, the station closed but the tracks still remain in use as part of United States Route 101.
