Rosemead is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 10,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north shore of San Pablo Bay and is part of the Richmond Area. The first residents of what would become Rosemead were immigrants from Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union who arrived in 1847. They built their homes along the now-demolished railroad right-of-way that ran through town. By 1870, many Russian families had moved to Rosemead and it became an enclave for Russian émigrés living in or near San Francisco. In 1882, a group of investors led by Henry Durant bought 3,000 acres (1 km2) southeast of Rosemead on which they founded Durant Rancho adobe agriculture and ranching community known as Durantville. From here they began to cultivate citrus fruits, honeydews and roses under contract with local farmers until 1923 when they sold all their land to the Livermore National Laboratory for development into probable national forest reservation status as part of Livermore National Laboratory State Park System. At present there are over 4 million plants growing in this area! Rosemead is a small town in central California, located about 30 miles east of San Francisco. It was founded by Jesuits in 1852 as part of the Rancho Cañon de la Hacienda, and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1959. In the 1970s, Rosemead began to experience growth as an agricultural center due to its location on the Kern River near the then-new export processing zone known as Midway. The population peaked at 362 in 2000 but has since declined modestly. Today, most residents are elderly people who live alone or with fewer than five other family members. The earliest record of Rosemead comes from Mission Santa Cruz de Velasco's 1695 map which shows a small village called "Rosena" within sight of what is now Rosemead. The first European settlement in this area may have been made by Franciscans under Father Junipero Serra in 1777 while he was serving as vicar general for all Northern California. At some point during his tenure, Father Serra purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) bordering present-day Rosemead from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $4 per acre ($100 per hectare). This land would later become known as Rancho Cañon de la Hacienda after father Serra's donation to the Fathers who ran it. The first settler to arrive at Roseneed was José Antonio Vargas on October 10th 1852 when he and his wife Margarita arrived with their four children from Puebla, Mexico via El Paso del Norte on horseback across the state line into California. They set up a shantytown named Villa Bauerstatterhof near present day East Park Road and North Main Street before moving out onto more fertile land northwest of town where they built a adobe ranch house that still stands today - Roseneed Historical Museum property #1B19. José Antonio Vargas died soon afterwards however and his widow Margarita continued taking care of their young children until 1855 when she married local rancher Manuel Nieto and moved away from Roseneed; history does not mention whether her husband ever remarried . For many years it was believed that Nieto had killed Vargas after learning about his involvement with Spanish treasure seekers; however recent evidence suggests that Nieto may have simply abandoned Vargas' body without any Treasure knowledge being taken advantage of him . On November 15th 1855 Jose Rulfugio arrival with 20 soldiers from Monterey Peninsula Barracks at what is now Midway Airport opposite downtown where they erected a log cabin and renamed it 'Roseneed'. Thereafter sporadic visits were made by families including one by Captain John Sutter on January 2nd 1856 when he led troops against natives at Clear Lake downstream from town Landing Creek Bridge near present day Midway Airport hangar - both sources agree that there were no Indians living within 2 miles of town at that time In 1863 gold was discovered northwest of town along what is now US Highway 395 between Badwater Basin and Mount Shasta dam; early prospectors found over 1 million dollars worth total gold mineralization including 350 ounces (10 grams) weight per tonne assay grade metal! The discovery triggered heavy rush activity throughout western United States resulting in numerous new settlements being established around Gold Rush era towns such as Stockton, Sacramento and San Francisco bay areas; one account claims “the whole country seemed like one great open field” according to contemporaneous newspaper accounts By 1865 Roseneed had reached its peak population numbering 500 residents but due to economical reasons many residents left for various reasons such as lack of water or difficulties raising crops due to scant rainfall during those years . The community was developed around the intersection of U.S. Route 101 and Rosemead Road in the early 1920s as a result of its proximity to Hollywood. The name "Rosemead" was probably derived from the fact that many of the trees in the community were planted at nearby Turney Gardens. In 1924, independent movie producer Harry Cohn bought land at the intersection of U.S. Route 101 and Rosemead Road for what would become his Cohn-Bennett Studios, which would produce films such as "The Godfather", "The Searchers", and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes". In 1951, Sony Pictures Corporation acquired Cohn-Bennett Studios and renamed it Columbia Pictures Entertainment Incorporated. In 1957, Columbia merged with United Artists Corporation to form Paramount Communications Incorporated. Since then, Rosemead has seen a number of changes including becoming an all-boys school until 1972; being a center for environmental studies before becoming known more for its agriculture industry; experiencing rapid growth during the 1990s due to new development along U.S. 101; and finally declining population levels throughout most of the 2000s until reaching lows in recent years due to increased competition from surrounding communities
