They named their new town San Fernando de la Vega after the estate of Fiscal General Manuel Nieto y Valdivia near modern-day Santa Barbara City. The mission was destroyed by Native Americans in 1827 and abandoned. A post office called Rosemead was established in 1868, but no residents moved to it until 1870 when James Hine became its first postmaster. In 1901, annexation of much of southern Imperial County resulted in the creation of Rosemead as a separate municipality with a population of 4,611 people (4th largest in California). In 1916–1920 during World War I, Rosemead served as an ammunition dump for ammo rations being shipped to soldiers stationed overseas. In 1923–1924 construction began on the University of Southern California's campus located just east of town; this brought increased development to Rosemead as well as increased international trade that led to increased industry and jobs throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In 1932–1939 during World War II local companies produced munitions for use in both Europe and China; these businesses continued into the postwar period while many other Roseseed businesses went bust or ceased operations due to technology changes or other factors such as recessionary times caused by global economic instability (). After World War II ended there were few major developments until 1980 when USC opened its current campus which has since become one of America's most renowned universities ().
