Rosemead is a small community located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. The town of Rosemead was founded on May 25, 1888 by women who purchased land from the Rancho San Juan de los Padres. It was named for rose bushes in the area. The first post office opened in 1889 and later changed its name to Rosemead after Mrs. John Fenton Rose of Los Angeles. The first school in town was established in 1892 and operated as a private school until 1917 when it became part of the Pasadena School District. In 1922, the first indoor basketball court was built and Rosemead High School opened its doors that year. In 1934, the United States Post Office moved from Pasadena to Rosemead and continued to be used until it closed on October 15, 1984 due to budget cuts within USPS Atascosa Division which coincided with then-Governor Jerry Brown's efforts to reduce state spending statewide He also proposed closing post offices throughout California during his time as Governor In 1978, a new elementary school building replaced an earlier one that had been destroyed by fire several years earlier. That same year saw the opening of an outdoor swimming pool which still operates today as part of Brookshire Park Community Pool which is also home to The Arboretum & Botanical Garden and various other attractions including three baseball diamonds, golf courses (two full-time), tennis courts (a public recreation area), playgrounds (three), five parks totaling over 137 acres including two waterparks - North Park Zoo and South Park Lake - as well as more than 100 smaller park units including 14 sports fields with bleachers for up to 500 people each., On November 3rd 2017 City Councilwoman Lorena Gonzalez announced that she will run for city manager against incumbent Michael Kamenetz who has held this position since 2015; her campaign website can be found at www://www2roseameadioworkspace1.com/. Rosemead is a small town in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley region of California, located about 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. Rosemead is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by John C. Fremont and his wife Catharine Greenough as an agricultural outpost on an Indian reservation east of present day Rosemead. The name "Rosemead" comes from a local Rancho de los Nietos property that had been given to Catharine's father-in-law by José Joaquín Mora y Tejada during their tenure as governor of California in 1836–37. The Moras were originally Mexican Americans who had arrived in Northern California around 1821 when they took up land grant from Manuel Nieto, one of Mexico's most powerful men at the time. Afterward, they continued to hold onto their holdings until 1861 when they sold them to American Fur Company agent James Wolkart for $5,000 cash and livestock. In 1865 Wolkart appointed George Atherton as the first postmaster and began construction on a courthouse and schoolhouse which were completed in 1867. In 1870 Atherton married Catharine Greenough and together they started a dairy farm west of town which became known as Atherton Dairy after him. Eventually other farmers also bought into the business and it grew into what is today called Atherton Farms Incorporated.. During World War II Rosemead served as site of two training camps for American troops: Camp Beale located near downtown on State Route 63 between 1945–47 and Camp Upton near present day Woodland Hills on Interstate 580 between 1942–44; both camps operated under USAAF control until 1946 when US Army Air Forces took over responsibility for them In 1957 Garnet Health System opened its first hospital here with 7 beds after buying out Atherton Dairy operations.. Garnet Hospital now has more than 80 beds across 8 campuses across Northern California.. The city annexed parts of unincorporated Ironwood Heights east of town following annexation disputes with nearby towns over water rights dating back to 1922
