Rosemead began as a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. On December 5, 1847, it became a city after voters approved an act to make it a municipality. The population of Rosemead was 3,062 in 1880 and 4,711 in 1890. The first post office opened in 1848. The town was named for Rachelle de Rothschild, who donated land for the town site. In 1868, the Rosemead Pioneer Cemetery opened and remains one of the largest cemeteries in California. In 1916, General Electric built its first electric power plant in Rosemead and has since operated there providing electricity to many homes and businesses in the community ever since. In 1955-1956, construction began on Interstate 680 which connected Rosemead with Modesto and other nearby cities. The final phase of I-680 construction included new roads and bridges which replaced earlier Class A highways that had served as routes for cars traveling between Sacramento County and other parts of California.
