It is named after General John Shimkus, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later a U.S. Army general during World War I. The city was first settled in 1884 by Eastern Californians and became an agricultural center with a population of around 20,000 people in 1920. Rosemead experienced rapid growth during World War II as a center for munitions production, becoming one of the most important cities in the country. The city's economy slowly declined following the war and its population has since shrunk to around 10,000 people. However, Rosemead remains an important cultural and educational center for the region and has been home to several universities including UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, and San Diego State University.

According to the 2010 census, Rosemead has a population of 5,878 people. The name "Rosemead" was given to it by General John Boggs after he noted that many of the trees there were pink because of the rosebushes that grew nearby. The first post office in Rosemead was established in 1879. The town was named after rosebushes which lined an old road leading from Red Bluff to Nipomo. In 1905, incorporation came about due to conflicts between residents over election boundaries for local school board members and for assessment duties levied against them by Rosemead citizens. In 1916, construction began on what would become Rosemead's first high school, now known as North High School. Classes started in 1917 and were completed within two years; at that time, it was one of only a few high schools built in Tehama County during World War I. In 1928, when Interstate 5 was built through central California and Tehama County, traffic congestion caused much development around town center; this resulted in the addition of several blocks north of Route 12 (now Main Street) between Washington Boulevard and Prospect Avenue; these blocks are now known as "The Plaza". Highway 20 became available to locals once again following its completion from Red Bluff to Fresno on November 15th 1951 - making Rosemead accessible once again for commerce and tourism purposes. With most growth having occurred within arterial streets such as US-12 or I-5 rather than near downtown where services could be provided closer to residents like library or grocery stores etc., some aspects of life today may be unique for those who live outside dense metropolitan areas with easy access to malls/stores any time day or night without spending hours driving into backcountry towns like Diamond Bar or Tulare County located approximately 45 minutes away by car or less depending on timeofday . The name may be derived from "Rosalie" (niece of Josefina Guerrero), who arrived in 1836 with her family from Mexico City and took up residence near Rosalesville on the banks of the San Joaquin River. Rosemead has a long history as an agricultural center and production area for grapes, almonds, wheat, cotton, eggs, milk products, corn and other crops. Today it is known for its wine industry, which produces some of California's most popular wines such as Zinfandel and Shiraz
As of 2000, Rosemead had a population of 7,695. The town was founded in 1853 by John Sutter, who named it for his sister's birthplace, Roscommon, County Clare. It was platted in 1865 and became a part of the City of Pasadena in 1888.
