In 1916, community organizer Harvey Milk organized opposition to Proposition 8 which would have banned gay marriage statewide; this event helped spur public support for same-sex marriage becoming legal throughout California two years later under Proposition 11 (the Yes on 11 campaign). In 1984 Mayor Dianne Feinstein declared May Day "National Gay/Lesbian/Transgender Day" in honor of Milk's memory and ongoing struggle for civil rights for LGBTI people throughout California and beyond
