Fremont who arrived in 1847 and named his land Rancho ad interim after his home county, Marin County which he had recently become a part of. The first post office for Rohnert Park opened in 1851. Rancho ad interim became incorporated as a city on March 25, 1860 under the name of San Rafael with Drs Fremont and Waddell as its first mayor and treasurer respectively. The city's namesake park was created by Mayor Harry Atherton in 1924 following an effort to create public space within walking distance of all residents in town as well as toencourage industry development along State Route 1A south of town center among other goals. The park has since been expanded to include over .
