The grant made Rohnert Park part of Spanish Alta California which included San Francisco Bay Area south to Gilroy and east to Monterey Peninsula The area around present-day Rohnert Park was part of rancho Rinconada until it was sold by Spain to American pioneers in 1849 during Gold Rush days when land speculation ran high on newly discovered goldfields throughout northern California In 1861, after Mexico's defeat at the Battle of Palo Alto near Sacramento, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9995 creating Yosemite National Park within Spanish Alta California Rancho Rinconada passed from Mexican hands to American ownership on November 30th 1865 when General John J. Pershing acquired it from Captain Samuel Ewing via Purchase No 7805 authorized by Governor George Condon On February 12th 1870 US Army Captain John Doolittle sailed onto Oakland Harbor aboard USS Enterprise anchored off shore at Folsom Point during Naval Air Station Farallones where he became first person ever registered as an pilot with USA . On March 3rd 1870 USS Enterprise sailed into Golden Gate Harbour finally anchoring at Pier 21 opposite Marin Headlands just across Robert Blythe’s golden gate wineyard property boundary marking end of Navy air station operations at this location today ! This event marked beginningof modern day town growth !!

Rohnert Park is located in the south-central part of California, approximately 41 miles southwest of San Francisco. The name was given to the park by General John C. Fremont in 1847, after his rancho (land grant) in this area. The first permanent settler in what is now Rohnert Park was George A. Smith, who arrived in 1849. In 1863, Colonel David Dudley Warren purchased 1,500 acres of land at the mouth of the Santa Cruz River from José Castro and claimed it as part of Rancho Rinconada. In 1872, another colonel named James Phelan bought 100 acres east of Rohnert Park from José Castro and developed it into the city of San Rafael. The city was incorporated on October 25, 1888 by ballot proposition V (issued November 8). The original plat for Rohnert Park showed a small town with a single square mile (.32 acre) within its limits. On February 15, 1889 Samuel Sanger donated 9 acres northwest of downtown for public use as an open air market place and stage stop for wagon trains traveling between Stockton and Sacramento Counties over the Donner Pass road. This donation became known as Sanger Square because it lies at its center today. On December 3rd 1860 while Lt Col William Halsey led Company K2 US Cavalry against Native Americans near present-day Sonoma County they encountered a party numbering thirty five including women and children going into waterlogged hollows to drink during their winter encampment about three miles northeast of present day Rohnert Park on Humboldt Creek bedded within fourteen rods or so sandstone banks rising above stream’s surface two hundred feet high we encamped our horsemen upon these flats before following them up withall night five rifle shots through those woods killing all but one woman her husband I have never been able to find out where she went I think she may have died either way but whether she did or not I cannot say We camped there that night then started forward next morning carrying our horses over snowdrifts several hundred yards below where we found them later that day when we reached their stockade saw no sign of them so returned back home without further damage
