Rohnert Park is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 59,563 at the 2010 census. It is named after John F. Rohnert, an early settler and businessman who developed the area in 1864. The park has over 5,000 acres (2 km²) of rolling hills, woodlands, and beaches. The city was founded in 1865 as part of a larger town called Rockville Centre on what is now the eastern edge of Golden Gate Park. When Rockville Centre was discontinued as a municipality in 1868, its citizens elected to establish their own city and name it after John F. In 1888, however, the city limits were revised following annexation by Berkeley making Rohnert Park encompass all but two square miles (6 km²) of downtown Berkeley proper before terminating at University Avenue north of San Pablo Creek. On October 15th, 1892 Pacific Gas & Electric Company completed construction on what would become its largest gas station west of the Mississippi River – originally it stood near today’s intersection of Paseo de la Reforma and Mission streets but since then it has been located at Masonic Boulevard and 17th street NW across from Safeway shopping center (now known as Macy’s). In 1875, John Sutter founded Jardine & Mathews Land Company, which developed much of present-day Sacramento County. With this new investment came new development opportunities for Rohnert Park residents; they soon began to build homes and businesses around Sutter Avenue and Main Street. By 1902, there were more than 150 homes in Rohnert Park. In 1909, when California became an independent state, Rohnert Park amalgamated with other nearby communities to form the city of Sacramento. Today’s downtown area retains some aspects of its past; such as clockwise streets that lead from First Street eastward through Homecoming Square (the original site where city hall once stood), Plaza de la Independencia (the former site of City Hall), and Broadway Shopping Center (now called Ain’t It Cool News). Rohnert Park has experienced many changes over the years; however, it has always been a vibrant community with active citizens who have played a role in its growth. Despite these challenges – including multiple fires that have destroyed numerous homes – Rohnert Park residents have persevered through thick and thin throughout its history.
The city of Rohnert Park, California was founded in 1887 by George Washington Rohnert. The city was named for him because he donated land to the town. The first post office in the city was opened in 1888. In 1902, the city became one of metropolitan areas within the Angeles County system and adopted a charter. In 1911, the city annexed part of Corona Heights. In 1916, Rohnert Park became an incorporated municipality with a population of 35,000 people. The City Council enacted a resolution designating Christmas as "Rohnert Park's National Holiday."
