Rohnert Park is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California, United States. The population was 67,595 at the 2010 census. It lies on an undulating hillock overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and its namesake creek, part of the East Bay metropolitan area. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Rohnert Park was founded in 1846 as a small settlement near what is now downtown San Francisco. The City of San Francisco became aware of this development and began to offer financial assistance to Galt's investors. In 1880, Mayor George Hearst donated land east of Market Street for a public park which would eventually become Rohnert Park. The first site for Rohnert Park was located at what is now Dumbarton Oaks Cemetery; however many people objected to this location because it was close to their homes and businesses. A second site was chosen due to its proximity to Candlestick Point Naval Base which served as the main port for naval vessels during World War II. This location allowed for much expansion within the park throughout the years including new trails and areas designed specifically for recreation or military use such as an ammunition dump that still remains today adjacent to Mills Landing beachfront walkway). In 1955, CEO Raymond Loewy donated $10 million towards construction of one of America’s largest reservoirs which would form half of today’s athletic field – Lake Merritt – within Rohnert Park boundaries (the other half formed Alameda County). Today’s Frank Gehry-designed reservoir forms one side while two tall Presidential Towers flank it on either side forming an inviting skyline view from any angle around town or city limits! Construction continued through 1966 with completion in time for President Lyndon Johnson's inauguration ceremony on January 20th, 1969 ( concurrent with nearby shoreline changesleading upriver creating Lake Merritt) President Richard Nixon also attended ceremonies at lakehead including having his helicopter landing pad built just beyond present day Rolling Hills Drive near where US 101 crosses over into Marin County) .
