The new town quickly adopted Anglo cultural values and boasted an opera house, library, theater and other civic amenities typical of early 20th century small towns. In 1916 Rohnert Park became part ofSonoma County when it was divided between Marin County to the north and Santa Clara County to the south based on population size. As Silicon Valley spread out across Northern California during World War II suburban development began around San Francisco Bay with as many as 45% of all households having Internet access—the second highest concentration in any county in California after Los Angeles. Rohnert Park is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 24,735 at the 2010 census. Rohnert Park is located on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley. The first people to live in what is now Rohnert Park were Native Americans who hunted and fished in the nearby creek valleys. In 1876, A. P. Beall bought 640 acres of land near present-day Pacifica Boulevard and Redwood Road for $4,000 from Abel Jameson, founder of Beall's Store and Ranching Company. Beall named his new property "Rohnert Park" after Hermann Rommel, commander of Panzer Division "VIII" during World War II (1939–1945). In 1906 Alice Paul visited Rohnert Park and spoke with local farmers about starting a women's suffrage organization in Northern California called the National Women's Suffrage Association (NWSA). NWSA had received help from Alice Paul and her husband Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who had been working with civil rights organizations in Atlanta since 1955; they decided to move their headquarters to Oakland so as not to be associated with Southern ugly attitudes towards women that prevailed there at the time. On October 15, 1910 only 5 people attended a meeting to approve plans for a park south of Interstate 280. The first set of trees were planted on November 3rd by Drs John Muir and Horace Mann along with other citizens involved in developing the park area which included today’s shopping center including Macy’s department store adjacent to MenloPark University Hospital Over time more people participated including Mayor Arthur Asheweather Sr., Supervisor John McLaren, City Attorney Harry Ackermann as well as landscape architects McKim Lewis & Whitehead who created an original 4 acre nature reserve which remains today one of only two such reserves nationwide remnant within city limits
