Rohnert Park is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 34,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Oakland and is bordered by Contra Costa County to the north and east, Berkeley to the south and west, and Hayward to the northwest. Rohnert Park was founded in 1868 as part of a larger ranching area that stretched from Dublin Bay to Stockton. The park was named for John F. Rohnert, who had purchased land in 1856 near present-day Rohnert Park Boulevard and Interstate 880. The first people to live in what is now Rohnert Park were Native Americans who hunted game in the area around Dublin Bay before moving northward into what is now Contra Costa County. In 1868 John Fenton bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of Rancho San Pablo de Atwater from Manuel Nieto and opened it up to white settlers as Rancho Rincon de la Sierra. By 1870, when James Hustedt bought 160 acres (60 hectares), most of what today makes up Rohnert Park had been developed as homesites or small villages around Rincon Creek - including Atherton,Berkeley Heights, Coyote Pointe Village, Dunnigan Hills and others which still exist today within walking or biking distance of their original locations
The town of Rohnert Park was founded in 1851 by farmers and their families who moved from Northern California. The community grew quickly, and by 1860 there were over 100 residents. In 1868 the first school was built, and in 1870 the first post office opened. By 1880 the population had reached 350 people. The town was incorporated in 1886, and by 1912 it had a population of 1,000 people. In 1916 the first shopping center was constructed, and in 1922 the first hospital opened. The town experienced rapid growth during World War II with its participation in the war effort. After the war, however, it decreased in size and function until it ceased to exist as a municipality on July 1, 2013.
