The name stuck, even though no real gold was found until 1861 when George Hahn discovered Sacramento Gold Mines near present-day Northvale Drive in unincorporated Sonoma County (). In 1872–73, Judge Augustus Ewing led a team that mined quartz from what is now Cathedral Peak () on behalf of United States Geological Survey (). After surveying other parts of San Francisco Peninsula they selected Rohnert Park as their location for a research station (). On July 24, 1872 USGS Deputy Director John Wesley Powell reported finding significant amounts of valuable turquoise there which he offered for sale to private interests (), but no buyers came forward so USGS Manager John Collins transferred all mineral rights back to USGS on October 16th (). The first post office opened in Rohnert Park on November 1st, 1872 (); it was known as "Eureka." A newspaper from that time reports that business increased rapidly due to new discoveries being made around town: “Today’s Enterprise” January 3rd 1870 has this advertisement: “GOLD MINES IN ROHNERT PARK! $10 PER KILO SAMPLE? WE ARE ADVANCING NOTICE THAT THE PROPERTY IS NOW OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE UNITED STATES GEOGRAPHY OFFICE AS AN IMPORTANCE TO PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE.– COUNCIL ON DECEMBER 5TH ADMITTED SUCH BUSINESS CONCERNING THIS PREMIER LAND OF GOLD NEAR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.– IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT ALL MINERAL CLAIMS MUST BE PRESENTED TO THE GOVERNOR BEFORE ANY DISPUTE CAN BE ENTERTAINED OVER TITLE TO RESEARCHSTATION PLACE.– CORRESPONDING TO REQUEST FROM LOCAL MINERS WHO ARE NOT CONTESTANTS IN THIS PROCEEDINGS., . . ." "Eureka" remained the post office until 1915; then it changed its name to "Rohnert Park". In 1895 an electric company built a substation just south of today's City Hall plaza; service began December 15th 1896(). This substation served many small businesses up until 1978 when PG&E bought Southern Pacific Railroad's right-of-way along Telegraph Road between Palo Alto and Menlo Park creating Palo Alto/Rohnert Park Electric Railway ). Service ended February 17th 1978 when PG&E sold all its lines except corridor running east-west through Palo Alto into Emeryville (. Ridgecrest Boulevard remains open today as an electric commuter line between Emeryville BART Station and Emeryville High School.) Avenue Q stands between Pioneer Square (to the northwest)and Golden Gate Bridge (to the southeast). It features large Brutalist architecture designed by architect Paul Rudolph starting in 1966 which continues unchanged even today ()
