Rohnert Park is a small city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Marin County and bordered by Sonoma County to the west and east. In 1870, the town had a population of 220; it growth rapidly due to new businesses and agricultural production brought about by railroad development which arrived soon after Wm. Gassaway's purchase of the trackage leading from Sausalito to Yountville. By 1880, the population had reached 600 with 113 dwellings and three hotels/motels (the First Hotel and two others were built between 1886 and 1889). During this time there were also several churches including Our Lady Of Lourdes Chapel (1868), Sts Jean Baptiste & Marie Victoire Parish Church (1870), Christ Episcopal Cathedral (1872), Protestant Norwegian Methodist Episcopal Cemetery (1875), Spanish Catholic Cemetery (1877) and Japanese American Japanese American Buddhist Temple(1902). In 1916 when World War I began most people went into hiding but some stayed behind because they did not want their homes bombed or looted by Germans during that time period since they did not support war crimes committed by Germany such as concentration camps etc.; nevertheless many buildings within town have German language graffiti dating back to that time period like Fraulein Becker’s bakery where signs reading “Wehrmacht bake” still remain today adjacent to Hitler Youth Museum ruins next door

The land that now makes up Rohnert Park was first developed as farmland by the Van Ness family in 1887. In 1906, when San Francisco became a city, the Van Ness brothers donated 640 acres (254 ha) of their Rancho Seco land to the City of San Francisco for use as an open-air park. The original park was named after John F. Rohnert and his wife Isabella Bancroft Lowell and their two children: William Morrow Rohnert (1881–1948), who founded Apple Computer; and Isabelle Bancroft Lowell (1885–1964). After World War II, when development moved away from agriculture towards new industries such as plastics and electronics, much of the remaining rancho Seco land was used for housing developments, until it reverted back to the Van Nesses in 1965. In 1978 a group of community members led by Mayor Dianne Feinstein petitioned then-Governor Jerry Brown to create a municipally owned open-air park on portions of their former Rancho Seco site which would include natural areas Open Space Districts with access to trailshead restrooms and picnic areas near transit stops served by Muni Metro lines 1 and 3. On March 5th 1978 Governor Brown issued Executive Order #4643 creating Open Space District No. 8 within Open Space District No. 6 located east of Highway 101 between State Route 17A (Stinson Beach) & Interstate 580
