Rocklin, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. It was founded in 1887 by three brothers who named it after their father, John Rocklin. The town grew rapidly during the early decades of the 20th century, and by 1922 it had a population of over 1,500 people. However, during World War II the town's growth slowed as its residents turned to agriculture for income. In 1951 the portion of Rocklin east of Highway 99 was annexed into nearby Livermore. Rocklin is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas– Pomona Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rocklin was founded in 1887 by George Washington Head and his wife Anna Maria Head as a community for white farmers near their Rancho del Rio property on the Kern River. The original name of the community was "Rancho de las Palomas," Spanish for "ranch of the peacocks." The first post office in Rocklin opened in 1886. In 1907, Rocklin became an incorporated town with a population of about 60 people. At that time it had one sawmill and two stores. In 1912, rocklin's first school opened with 10 students and 2 teachers; it was replaced by a high school in 1925 when the town annexed nearby Unalaska Heights which had also been founded by George Washington Head Jr.. In 1934, Gold Rush fever gripped much of California and many miners prospected for gold along the San Joaquin River Valley; however, few found commercial success because of early strikes by local farmers who had responded to offers for land from mining companies. As mining ceased around 1936 due to overproduction caused largely by World War II shortages of metals needed to produce radios and other consumer goods,rocklin began to experience rapid growth as an agricultural center because its fertile soil would provide feed for livestock during times when other parts of California were barren or too salty for crops. During this time there were several businesses that dominated rocklin's economy: First came Gourd Shop (established 1924), later renamed Gourd Farms (1936), then Pottery Barn (1948). Other notable businesses during this time include Paintshop-L (1912), Oriental Trading Company No 13887 (1920) and J & W Welding Company Incorporated (1897). One major event that took place in Rocklin during this period is the incorporation of Kramers Drug Store into Kramers Radio Corporation on May 5th 1947 which became one of largest radio stores west coast until deregulation occurred in 1978). A new shopping mall called Gateway Mall opened adjacent to Route 66 on March 25th 2001 after years effort by residents/citizens groups who lobbied unsuccessfully against plans to build another large shopping mall next door on what used to be agricultural land near Interstate 15 exit 122B without any semblance of consultation or input from locals or even city planners!
