Rocklin is a small town located inuphemistically the Central Valley of California. It is situated on its namesake mountain, about an hour south of Sacramento and an hour north of San Francisco. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Rocklin was first settled by Native Americans in pre-historic times. The Ohlone people were the most likely to reside here, as they had ancestral homes near what is now Rocklin. In 1846, General Mariano Vallejo explored this area and named it for Captain John Cranch—the first white settler in Alta California. In 1870, Gold was discovered in nearby Isabella County and began flowing into California; consequently, Rocklin quickly became one of the most significant gold towns in the state. After years of boom-and-bust cycles, silver started to flow into the area during the late 1800s; however, only a few towns developed substantial mining operations because there were no major rivers or streams available to serve as transportation routes. However, when railroads came along and helped spur development throughout central California after World War II, both rocklin and other small towns saw newfound prosperity as companies such as PG&E (now CenturyLink) built new lines and brought workers here for jobs in construction and other industries. Today rocklin's economy still relies heavily on service sectors such as education and government employment; however manufacturing also remains important with a large marijuana industry beginning to surface recently

The population of Rocklin peaked at over 100,000 during the 1930s and 1940s, but has since decreased to about 30,000. The town is now located in the eastern Mojave Desert near Lancaster. John Rocklin was born on July 12th, 1785, in what is now central California. He settled in what is now Rocklin in 1849 and began trading goods with other pioneers who had arrived earlier that year. In 1851 he married Anna Maria Folsom and they began farming land around their cabin which they named "Folsom Hill". They also built a small schoolhouse and store which served the community for several years. In 1862 John Rocklin lost his farm to foreclosure and moved his family north into Owens Valley where they continued farming until 1865 when he sold his land to Humboldt County for $20 per acre ($2/acre today). After moving back to Rocklin he started a post office there with mail service starting on May 5th, 1870.
