Rocklin is a small town in California, located about an hour's drive from Sacramento. It was founded in 1859 by Mormons who had fled Utah. The town was first known as Hyrum, and was platted on November 10, 1859 by John Sutter and George Groomer. It was renamed Rocklin after James Fenton Rocklin, a United States Congressman from Oregon who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as US Minister to Mexico City. Rocklin is home to several significant historical figures. These include Mormon prophet Brigham Young and his brother Don Carlos Young (the son of Brigham), Johnny Appleseed (founder of the Apple Tree Nursery in nearby North Hollywood), actor Randolph Scott, and singer Helen Reddy. The towns main street, Main Street which runs east-west through the center of town, is also named for one or more of these individuals. Another notable resident of Rocklin during its early years was Hiram Maxim who built what are now two schools – one for boys and one for girls – in what is now the downtown area of the town. He also organized a local cricket team that became very successful over time. In 1911, following World War I when America entered into World War II with Europe on edge due to tensions over Austria-Hungary's role in that war, many businesses closed up shop due to lack of business opportunities after the war ended - including those run by Maxims childrens' friend Waddell Smithson who opened a store called The Woolen Mill on Main Street near where he lived with his parents until they died aged 94 years old in 1978). After Waddell Smithson's death his widow continued running The Woolen Mill until it closed its doors for good in 1984; however it reopened briefly under new ownership before closing again several weeks later without explanation.). In recent decades there have been sporadic efforts made to reopen The Woolen Mill although no such success has yet been achieved
Rocklin was founded in 1853 by pioneers of the California Gold Rush. The town became a center of trade and industry during the late 1800s, with a large population of miners and their families. In 1906, Rocklin was merged with nearby Redding to form the city of Redding.
