Rocklin is a town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 4,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Rocklin Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings covering most of the town center and surrounding area. The Tule Lake Massacre took place on October 11, 1885, when 40 men and boys were shot by settlers southwest of Rocklin after they accused them of poaching game in Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

Rocklin is a small town located in Inyo County, California, about an hour and a half north of the city of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1853 by John Rocklin and his family. The town became a post office in 1859. The first store in Rocklin was called the "Rocklin Woolen Mills" and opened on Main Street in 1853. It was destroyed by fire in 1865, but reopened under new ownership the next year. The store continued to be open until it closed its doors for good in 1898. The second store in Rockspring was built on Fourth Street near present-day Yosemite Boulevard around 1860. It also burned down, but reopened under new ownership shortly after. This store continued to be open until 1923 when it too closed its doors for good due to changing business conditions within the community. In 1903, the City of Rockspring incorporated as a municipality with John Rocklin as its first mayor. At that time, Rocklin had only six residents and no businesses other than his home base at 209 Main Street which he used as a grocery store and post office from 1853-1854; both these operations were conducted out of his home until 1861 when he moved into what is now known as the Old Town Jail Building on Sunrise Avenue which served as both his town hall (1854-1858) and courthouse (1860-1862). From 1862 until 1870 there were also two doctor's offices operated out of this building: one run by Drs Heston & Broughton ( 1863-1967), assisted by Drs Park & Sorge (1865-1927), while another office operated from 1865-1966 by Drs Aiken & Schlosser (the first physician ever licensed to practice medicine outside Of California). A number of interesting dignitaries including Ulysses S Grant visited Rockspring during their various military campaigns throughout the 19th century including General William Tecumseh Sherman who inspected army camps just inside San Bernardino Valley on December 9th, 1868 while visiting Mount Baldy northwest of Redding; General George Custer who camped at nearby Springerville January 14th - 17th 1886 during His march up along Santa Anita Mountains towards Placer County; Sheriff Thomas J Mackey who oversaw law enforcement activities near downtown Rockspring between 1888-1900; local ranchers such as Virgil Earp who established their own cattle brand name here some time after 1880; actress poisonous snake charlatan Fanny Farmer born November 12th 1850 Died February 2nd 1915 living at 5595 Beaumont Drive today among many others… much more can be found online at [rocklinsociety].org
In 1853, the first permanent settlers in what is now Rocklin County were James Irvine and his wife Catharine. TheIrvine family named their land Rancho San Antonio de la Cañada, after Santiago de Compostela, a Catholic missionary who had died in 1824. In 1859, about sixty families from eastern California started to arrive on the rancho in search of new land. The Irvines decided to name their settlement Rocklin after a small town in England that they had been visiting. They also bought some of the surrounding farms and scattered them around their new county. Over time, other people came and went to live in Rocklin but it always retained its name of "San Antonio." In 1898, when California became an independent country, San Antonio was included within the state as well. As Californians began moving away from agriculture towards industry and services during the late 1800s, San Antonio slowly lost its importance as a agricultural center. However, it continued to be a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful landscapes and historical landmarks.
