In 1930, when other towns within Fresno County were merged into county government, Rocklin remained outside of county limits and continued to be governed by its own board of supervisors. However, since then it has become one of the most commonly referred to communities within Fresno County as well as within southern California due to its proximity to both Los Angeles and Silicon Valley. Today, Rocklin retains much of its farming heritage with some significant crops such as cotton and citrus production still being grown today; however industrial development has greatly increased since the late 1990s with a number of factories including Panasonic Corporation locating hereabouts during that time period. Rocklin, California is located in the Inland Empire of Southern California on the border between San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The population was 6,863 at the 2010 census. The name Rocklin comes from Spanish meaning "rocky place." The town was founded in 1881 by prospectors who discovered gold near what is now Rocklin. It became a small mining community until it became an agricultural center with large cotton plantations in the early 20th century. By 1920, Rocklin had grown to become a main transportation and commercial center for central Valley counties. During World War II, Rocklin played an important role as one of several military base towns in central Valley County. It was from here that veterans brought their war experience to local communities throughout the postwar period. After the war, Rocklin experienced rapid growth as a suburb of Los Angeles until 1980 when it lost its status as an independent city and become part of Los Angeles County under Proposition 13. Rocklin was founded in 1847 by Col. George Rocklin and his wife, Mary Alice. The city was named after Colonel Rocklin because of the many hills in its vicinity. In 1868, the town of Rocksville was established adjacent to the present-day city of Rocklin. In 1896, a post office called Rocksville was opened in honor of General John C. Frémont, who had served as commander of the California Expedition during the Mexican-American War. The City Council renamed the post office in 1900 to Rocksville City Hall in memory of then-Mayor Arthur Shingleton Parkman. In 1907, a fire destroyed most of downtown Rocksville and several businesses including the Post Office and Masonic Temple. However, following days of fundraising and donations from citizens, efforts were made to rebuild downtown rocksville with help from local businesses and foundations In 1912, Mayor Parkman died suddenly and was succeeded by Alderman Wesson Denny. Denny quickly enacted programs to improve public education within Rocksville; one such program mandated that all students must attend high school during their first year in town The population of rocksville grew rapidly during World War II due to wartime production opportunities at nearby shipyards Denny resigned as mayoralty due to health problems in 1951 and was succeeded by Adolph Jaffe Jaffe increased housing development within the city limits while promoting tourism as an important industry It wasn't until 1973 when Jaffe announced plans for redevelopment on portions of what is now South G Street which led to heavy protests from residents concerned about possible displacement
