It is located adjacent to San Bernardino County and has an area of 422.5 square miles (1,021.8 km²). Riverside's history dates back to 1871 when it became part of the newly formed county of San Bernardino. The first people to live in what is now Riverside were approximately 10 or 12 Mexicano pioneers who came from central Mexico and settled on the banks of the riverbank near present-day La Mesa. They built their homes on long poles that they lashed together with vines or thorns as shelter from the harsh winter weather and early summer sun. This group of pioneer families numbered about 40 in all according to one source, but there are no records to support this claim since most histories dealing with early Riverside mention only a few individuals rather than any comprehensive community effort. In 1872, Thomas Edison called on his friend and business associate George Westinghouse to invest $10,000 in shares in two new electric companies he had founded – Westinghouse Electric Company and American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). These new companies would help bring electricity into many homes across America for the first time – something that had been attempted before but never achieved successfully due to lack of infrastructure at that time. One such home where power was finally brought into service was located just outside present-day Riverside on Imperial Street near Orange Avenue – also known as “Old Town” because it once comprised much of what is today downtown Riverside proper dating back more than 100 years! The original owner/operator of this property was Mrs. Anna Jaffe who wired her home for electricity in 1872 using an old hand crank device she obtained from her brother-in-law! In fact, electricity began being delivered right around corner from Mrs Jaffe’s house through various small generators until 1916 when a large electrical company got involved which provided three hundred thirty nine Watts AC direct current for every household within city limits! What a wonderful day that was for everyone involved including Mrs Jaffe who could finally enjoy some peace and quiet after having to contend with all those noisy streetcars during rush hour! And lest we forget about Old Town’s very own streetcar line which stopped running passenger service altogether in 1939!! What a great way things used to be before technology took over everything!!!
