Riverside, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the San Gabriel River and has been since 1881. Riverside was incorporated as a town in 1892, and became a city on July 15, 1907. The population of Riverside was 302,451 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Riverside was originally inhabited by the Tongva people. The first permanent settler in what is now Riverside County was Francisco Palouzco who landed his ship "Los Pinos" on January 25th 1785 near what is today called North Park Boulevard and Ball Road in what is now downtown Riverside. He named his new settlement after Saint John's Chapel (Church of Our Lady of Fatima), which he had seen while traveling through Mexico City to visit his bishop there. In 1871, Indian Wars between Californio settlers and the Tongva began. On February 7th 1865 an attack by 20 Native Americans resulted in the death of three frontier men from the party led by Captain John Crespo: Samuel Hodge, George Atwater and James Shields.. In 1865-1867 several more skirmishes took place with Indians before all hostilities ended with an exchange of bows and arrows. A smallpox epidemic that struck Southern California during this time killed up to 50% of the county's adult residents; however no one knows for sure how many died from smallpox contracted among Spanish settlers living inland because most documentation about this period comes from missionaries working in southern California during that time who reported seeing no cases or deaths among their converts living there.. On November 3rd 1850 – four years after Mexican Independence - General José Joaquin de la Mesa granted land comprising present day northeast Riverside including parts of east Orange County to Abraham Lincoln Warner for $200 per acre ($6 per sq mi). In 1870–72 much controversy surrounded plans by then Supervisor Lorenzo Kennon to build a toll road across San Bernardino Mountains linking Santa Ana with San Bernardino Valley via Interstate 10 so freight traffic would be diverted away from Tuolumne Meadows crossing]; however ultimately nothing came of this proposal either because state Senator David Hale blocked its passage in December 1970 despite strong Democratic support Among Members Of The Senate Judiciary Committee chaired then by Orrin Hatch which included Minority Whip Dick Durbin And Majority Leader Tip O’Neill After hearing public testimony on March 1st 1971 From Representatives Robert Fuhrman And Dan Burton I voted against moving forward With Bill To Authorize The Expenditure Of Funds For The Construction Of Interstate 10 Toll Road Near Intersection Of State Route 91 & US Highway 395 However This action did not bring about My Defeat As I Was Outvoted By Mr Hatch And Other Republicans On That Committee But Led To My confirmation As Associate Justice On That Court By His Fellow Republican member Larsen Jorgensen . A study done back in 1969 showed that if built it would have created 975 jobs over 5 years! If approved it would also have cost taxpayers $1 billion dollars! However its shelved again due mainly because Governor Ronald Reagan didn't want any highway projects built near residential areas . Even though President George HW Bush eventually passed legislation authorizing construction beginning October 1st 1985 federal funds were obligated starting January 1st 1986 making it possible to begin work on just one section - portion extending 8 miles west from I-10 over IRVINE VALLEY TO THE SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY HIGHWAY

The first post office was established in 1853. In 1870, the city of Riverside became part of the United States following California's admission to the Union. It grew rapidly in population and size over the next few decades, reaching its peak in 1900 with a population of nearly 100,000 people. However, during World War I Riverside experienced significant damage as a result of artillery fire from German forces on December 8, 1914. As a result of this violence and war-related economic problems, Riverside's population dropped below 10,000 for the first time in its history by 1919.
