Riverside is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 44,526 at the 2010 census. It lies on the San Gabriel River south of Los Angeles and east of Pasadena. The area around what is today downtown Riverside was mostly brushy savanna until development began along two major river corridors: First Street running from Fillmore Street north to Clarendon Avenue and then First Street east to Arroyo Boulevard. In 1892 John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill on land he had bought from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $5 thousand dollars with plans to build a flour mill and cotton gin there. After several years of construction (the mill moved from its original site in 1893), it opened in 1896 as the world’s largest flour plant under one roof with power supplied by cogeneration dating back to 1876 at converted railway yards north of town near present day White Sands Road/I-10 East entrance/exit 12th Ave./Riverside Blvd./White Sands Rd./John F Kennedy Drive). In 1916 another landmark arrived when Sutter donated land bordering Hoover Dam for a municipal waterworks facility which became known as Superior Water Works Company (SWC) before becoming Southern California Municipal Water District (SCMWD) following statehood in 1948 In 1967 SCMWD merged with Northern California Municipal Water District (NAMW) forming collectively Riverside County government which continues to operate today under three separate administrations - countywide, locally through Department Of Public Utilities services; regionally through 7 Regional Utility Authority districts; statewide through Orange County government service department .
