Riverside was founded bySeparate from the city of Los Angeles in 1875, it became part of thelater City of Los Angeles on January 1, 1896. The original land for Riverside was near the junction of what is now Orange and Riverside Streets. On May 8, 1876, a group of businessmen led by Captain John C. Fremont organized a town meeting to discuss the idea of forming a new community within the city limits which they called "Riverside". They voted to form a town with a population of twenty-five people and named it after Major General George Armstrong Custer's victory at Washita Plains in 1874. The first residents arrived in early October 1876 and soon began building their homes. By late November, over $12,000 had been raised for expenses associated with founding Riverside. In December 1880, Mayor Simeon Woodbury issued an ordinance creating Riverside Park as an open space along West First Street between Orange Avenue and Fourth Street
