Riverside was founded on December 12, 1853, by Capt. The edifice served as the municipal government until 1912 when it was replaced by a new building designed by architect George Atherton that still stands today. In 1924, City Hall was donated to the County Government Building Authority which kept it until 1984 when it reverted back to its original name - City Hall Plaza. During World War II, Riverside played an important role as one of six military communities established in West Hollywood as part of Project Valerie so that American soldiers could be trained during peacetime without being under enemy fire
