In 1870, Major George Armstrong began making rifles out of barrel-making equipment he had purchased from a company in England. By 1900, almost all states in the Union had rifle manufacturers, and there were over 1,500 companies that made shotguns and handguns in California. The popularity of firearms led to an increase in the production of gun barrels. The first guns that used modern machinery to produce barrel ends were produced by Jesse James who Manufacturing Company built a line of pistols using government-issued barrel ends. This type of pistol was known as the James Rifle and became very popular during the Mexican Revolution. As technology improved, gunmen began to require longer lengths of gun barrels for their revolvers and other firearms which required more complex machining processes than previous generations could provide. It is located on the San Gabriel River and forms part of the eastern border of Los Angeles. Riverside has been inhabited by human beings since pre-historic times and was first known as Mayocco or Muisca for its many rushes and trees. The present site of Riverside was occupied by the Tongva people in 1839. The Spanish called it Rancho Verde because there were many hills there that looked like green verdant gardens. After years of exploration by Mexican soldiers under General Antonio López de Santa Anna, Mission San Bernardino was founded in 1769 near what is now downtown Riverside and encompassed much of today's area. The mission became a bishopric with two sees: Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of Roses) and Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (Our Lady of Conception). In 1821, following Mexican independence from Spain, Mexico established its own system of government which led to several challenges to the power of bishops within Mexican territory including Revolución Mexicana (the Mexican Revolution), during which time Bishop Francisco Xavier Alvarez y Arroyo served as interim presidente (1820–24). At some point after this event, most bishops left southern Mexico for northern Mexico where they continued to preside over dioceses only when their counterpart resided in Sonoma or Baja California; however local church officials continued to administer justice among villagers even though their jurisdictions lay within Mexican state boundaries. This situation changed with Bishop Agustín Cuellar's consecration as the second bishop of Riverside on November 15, 1850.* From then until 1861 when Don José Gomez Arce took office as First Vicar Apostolicoforte* due to regular political changes affecting Southern Mexico*, one bishop ruled both sides of the Arizona-Mexico line.* In 1871 Don José Gomez Arce retirered due to health problems; his replacement Fray Melchor Urtubey assumed responsibility for both sides*††‡†† but also resigned due to differences with Governor Manuel Micheltorena about ecclesiastical jurisdiction over Anglo Americans living southward in Baja California During this time don Francisco Javier Torres y Guerreros served as pastor general *††‡†*. As part of an effort by King Felipe II seeking national reconciliation after his Father's death in 1821 various priests from across Latin America gathered at La Paz Guanajuato Province for three months beginning July 14th 1821 where they decided upon a plan entitled "Plan de la Concordia" which calls for organizing all Latin American countries into federal states with a national capital located in Buenos Aires Argentina under direct rule from Madrid Spain*‡‡ *. However before any steps could be taken towards this goal numerous forces opposed it including Partido Nacionalista México who wanted actual sovereignty over all Latin America rather than federation while Lorenzo Mata demanding paramountcy over Ujarras province leading him eventuallyto leave Rioja Province effective February 10th 1830*. In light of these events don José Gomez Arce reassumed control over both sidesfinishing his term on March 26th 1830*§§§(* § denotes that information is still being researched and not yet available.) This period saw great progress made towardsnational reconciliation although much work remained undone such as creating an alphabetical list OFNARA instead OFNARG which would organize all languages into dialects alongwith creating provincial governments modeled after those found throughout Hispanic America Mission San Bernardino closed its doors effective December 24th 1891 following more than 100 years serving Californios On October 25th 1889 Mayor John Sutter announced plans for construction on what would become City Hall *.* *# (# indicates that more information about this event is still being researched) City Hall began construction on what would become bounded north by 4th Street eastward; west by Avenue 56 southward; east by Spring Streetstice** between Calvert Street and Sepulveda Boulevard; northwest corner lot formerly belonging to Farmers Insurance Company Park now belongs to Office Plaza Tower development company) On January 6th 1907 Mayor Sutter announced plans for annexation into Pasadena Municipality resulting in protests from residents who characterized annexation as taking away their right To Vote & Taxation #### ##*Municipal incorporation didn't take place until 1912
