At this point all production ceased except for some pistols and shotguns produced by Winchester Incorporated under contract from other manufacturers until 1898 when those contracts were canceled due to World War I considerations. Fivechiefs from Gabrielino Pueblo gathered together five hundred men and women between December 1834 and January 1835 to find new land west of Mexico City so they could refuge from Spanish oppression during the 1830s gold rush there. They selected today’s eastern edge of downtown Riverside for their new homeland because it had no direct route linking it with Mexico City; instead it followed what would become Topanga Canyon Boulevard eastward for about 15 miles before reachingmodern-day Riverside Boulevard near Banfield Junction. A year later Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all Californios living east of Mission Trails Road to leave without pay unless they brought along enough goods to cover their expenses—which only a few did because horses were more valuable items then cows at that time. Most families abandoned their homes and journeyed south where they met with more success in selling cattle or working off claims on older ranchos across central California until finally reaching Sonoma County around 1840 when disease led some fifty families back north again into Mexico Valley where most died from exposure or disease early next century..
