In 1824, U.S. President James K. Polk sent a detachment of United States Marines under the command of Commodore John D. Brown to protect the mission at San Diego from Mexican raiders. The Marines operated out of Fort Point on the southern tip of Mission Bay for six months before withdrawing in order to build their own basecamp at Fort Point Loma (now known as Balboa Park). The first permanent European settlement in what is now Riverside County was founded by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his party on May 17, 1769, near present-day Downtown Riverside. Nicolas-Jacques Conte built two small adobe huts on land that he purchased from Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla, Captain General of Mexico during the Mexican–American War. Riverside was first surveyed by Captain Georgeomba in 1823 and named after Major General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's brigade headquarters near downtown San Gabriel Valley which had been destroyed by Mexican forces during an invasion attempt led by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on December 12, 1821. On November 20, 1825, Santa Ana townspeople voted to change the name to Municipal District No. 3 (present day Riverside), while still using Georgeomba's original survey number because no other localities were considered appropriate for such a new district. It wasn't until February 6, 1827 that a deed was created with this new name and assigned to José María Agustín de la Hoz as proprietor/pioneer in what is now Riverside County’s northeast corner just south of Interstate 5 about 8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles
Riverside, California is a city in Riverside County, California. The population was 107,557 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the bank of the San Jacinto River and is bordered by Orange County to the north, Riverside County to the east, and Temecula County to the south. The city's first inhabitants were Native American traders and their accompanying animals who travelled along what is now known as State Route 1 in search of new grazing land in 1821. At that time there were no settlements within this area and it was only after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Mexican-American War victory that Santa Ana decided to establish a permanent settlement here in 1829. In 1853 an act of Congress designated Riverside as part ofOrange Co., making it one of Southern California's original counties. In 1915 Anaheim became Orange County’s newest municipality while Riverside proper remained within Orange Co.. The two municipalities consolidated on February 14th, 1966 with a total population of 109,365 residents (of which 53% were white), giving rise to what we know today as “Riverside”; although it had been under various names for many years before that date. The economy here has always been based on agriculture with citrus crops being one majorstay; however other industries have also come and gone over time including manufacturing (most notably for car parts) but most recently uranium mining which has led to some significant environmental concerns around town - though these are all slowly starting to be addressed by city planners. As an agricultural center from its origins through until recent times, much important industry took place along State Route 1A - now I-5 - providing access both ways for goods movement and people commuting here from other parts of Northern California or Southern Mexico during rush hour traffic congestion back then was nothing short of miraculous! These days things have changed somewhat with emissions trading permits issued for several companies looking to develop nearby hillsides but overall agriculture remains a big part of local life and culture hereabouts - something you can feel right away if you wander off into any given alley or rustle up some old saddles on a dusty old horse!

Riverside is a city in Riverside County, California. It is the seat of the City of Riverside and has a population of 298,362 as of 2018. The city was founded on November 15, 1866 by Capt. George Armstrong Cranch and his wife, Marilla Smith Cranch. The name "Riverside" originated from Spanish Rancho Santa Ana de la Cañada which was given to them by Governor Pico de la Hoz. In 1871, Captain Cranch's father-in-law, John Sutter, purchased some land north of the city and laid out what would become Riverside County on it. In 1873, when California became an independent republic under Ulysses S. Grant, the county seat went to San Bernardino because that was the nearest town with a government established for it (the current cities of Pasadena and San Diego were both incorporated in 1911). The first post office in Riverside opened in 1875; however, there was no town at that time called Riverside because most people living in what is now Riverside County came from nearby San Bernardino County or Orange County. The original town site lay near present-day North Park Boulevard and E Street (now renamed Market Street) within what is now downtown Riverside. Reverend Jepson Goodloe served as its first mayor. At that time only white men could vote; African Americans who lived east of Los Angeles did so through voter registration drives led by Mrs. James Weldon Johnson until their inclusion within the city limits in 1924
Riverside was founded in 1872 by Captain James Irvine as a small trading post on the San Joaquin River. The town grew rapidly and in 1887, it became the county seat of Riverside County. In 1912, Riverside was destroyed by an earthquake, making it the first city in California to be completely destroyed by an earthquake. More recently, Riverside has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern California due to its many recreational attractions and natural beauty.
